Handcrafted in
Radawadunna
Where It All Began
In the quiet village of Radawadunna, tucked within the lush interior of Sri Lanka, a tradition of cane weaving has been passed from hand to hand for generations. Long before modern furniture was shipped across oceans, local artisan families were crafting durable, beautiful pieces from the cane that grew abundantly in the surrounding landscape.
Ceylon Cane Crafts was founded to honour that tradition, and to give it a future. Our founders recognised that this centuries-old craft was at risk of being lost as younger generations moved toward industrialised work. By building a direct-trade model that put artisan livelihoods first, we created a pathway for these skills to survive and thrive in the modern world.
The Village of Radawadunna
Radawadunna is not just an address. It is the soul of everything we make. Located in Sri Lanka's North Western Province, the village sits close to natural cane reed beds that have supplied raw materials to local craftspeople for hundreds of years. The humid tropical climate, the red earth underfoot, and the generations of institutional knowledge all converge here to produce furniture that simply cannot be replicated in a factory.
When you purchase a piece from Ceylon Cane Crafts, it was made here, in this village, by someone whose family has been doing this for decades. That is a story worth telling, and a connection worth making.
Our Master Artisans
We work directly with over 50 artisan families in Radawadunna, all of whom are paid fair wages well above regional standards. Our master craftspeople spend years developing the fine motor skills required to weave cane into the tight, uniform patterns that define our furniture's character. There are no shortcuts, no machines that can replicate what a skilled artisan produces with their hands.
Each piece leaves the workshop bearing the subtle signature of the person who made it: a slight variation in the weave pattern, a unique tightness in the binding, an imperceptible stamp of human presence. We believe this is not a flaw. It is the point.
From Reed to Room
Our production process begins with the careful selection of mature cane reeds, harvested at the right season to ensure strength and flexibility. The reeds are then cured, split, and sorted by width before being handed to our weavers. Each frame is hand-bent and jointed, with no power tools or shortcuts, then methodically woven over several days depending on the complexity of the design.
Every completed piece is inspected, sanded, and finished with food-safe lacquers or natural oils before packing. We use responsibly sourced hardwood for primary structural joints, ensuring that the piece will outlast decades of daily use. Our 5-year structural guarantee is not a marketing claim. It is the natural result of building things properly.
What We Stand For
Sustainability
Cane is one of the fastest-renewing natural materials on earth. Our supply chain creates no deforestation, minimal waste, and a genuinely low carbon footprint.
Craftsmanship
Every joint is hand-fitted. Every weave is hand-pulled. The difference between handcrafted and mass-produced is something you feel the moment you sit in the chair.
Fair Trade
We publish our artisan wage rates and work with no middlemen. The price you pay flows directly to the families whose hands built what you received.
